There is something so special about summertime in New York. Long golden evenings, salty ocean air, barefoot walks in the sand, and warm city nights all create the dreamiest backdrop for celebrating your growing family. If you’re expecting a baby this year, a summer maternity session in NYC or The Hamptons is the perfect way to remember this fleeting season of anticipation and joy.

In this guide, I’m sharing my favorite summer maternity photoshoot ideas, including what to wear for summer maternity photos, the best time for a summer maternity session, and my go-to outdoor locations in both New York City and The Hamptons.

Why Summer Is So Magical For Maternity Photos

Summer has a natural sense of ease that photographs beautifully. For outdoor maternity photos, summer offers some of the most flattering natural light and the widest range of locations, from the city skyline at sunset to quiet stretches of beach at sunrise.

The days are longer, which means we can pick a time that works best around your energy levels. Many expecting moms feel most comfortable early in the morning or later in the day, and in the summer, we can still catch that soft, golden light at both times. And if you’re spending weekends out east, a Hamptons maternity session can be woven seamlessly into your summer vacation.

What To Wear For Summer Maternity Photos

One of the most common questions I’m asked is what to wear for summer maternity photos. The key is to choose outfits that feel comfortable, move beautifully, and reflect your personal style while keeping you cool.

Flowy dresses are always my first suggestion. Lightweight fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk photograph so gracefully, especially when a soft breeze catches the hem. Soft neutrals - ivory, cream, sand, blush, pale blue, and muted pastels- tend to be most flattering in summer light and work beautifully against both city and beach backdrops. These colors also keep the focus on you and your baby bump, not your clothing.

Maxi dresses with an empire waist or subtle smocking around the ribs are particularly lovely for maternity sessions. They gently highlight your bump without feeling tight or restrictive. If you love a bit of movement, consider a dress with a tiered skirt or a wrap style that adds natural shape. For more tailored looks, a simple, well-fitted midi dress can look incredibly chic in an NYC setting.

For partners and older children, aim for a coordinated but not perfectly matching palette. Think soft blues, whites, khakis, or light gray. Avoid bold logos, heavy patterns, or overly bright neons, as they can distract from the emotion of the images and reflect oddly in the sun. The Best Time For A Summer Maternity Session

Light is everything in photography, and in the summer, timing becomes especially important. The best time for a summer maternity session outdoors is almost always during “golden hour” - either just after sunrise or just before sunset.

For NYC and The Hamptons in the summer months, sunrise sessions typically begin very early, often around 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., depending on the time of season. The light is incredibly soft and flattering then, and we also benefit from quieter streets, empty beaches, and cooler temperatures.

Evening golden hour, about 60–90 minutes before sunset, is another favorite. The sun is lower in the sky, creating that warm, glowing light that’s so dreamy for outdoor maternity photos. We can time your session so we’re shooting during that last hour of light when everything looks warm, soft, and romantic.

Dreamy Outdoor Locations In NYC

New York City offers endless summer maternity photoshoot ideas, especially if you love the energy of the city but want a soft, romantic feel to your images. Central Park is a classic for a reason. In summer, it’s lush and green, with winding paths, stone bridges, and quiet lawns that feel worlds away from the busy streets. We might wander near Bethesda Terrace, stroll along tree-lined walkways, or find a sun-dappled spot by the lake. The park offers a mix of nature and iconic NYC scenery that works beautifully for a maternity session.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is another favorite, especially if you love a bit of city skyline in your photos. For something more neighborhood-focused, the West Village or Brooklyn Heights offer charming streets lined with historic brownstones, leafy trees, and beautiful stoops. These locations are wonderful if you imagine your session feeling like a gentle evening walk through the city, holding hands and pausing wherever the light is prettiest.

If you’re spending time out east, The Hamptons is a dream for summer maternity photos. The combination of open skies, sand, sea grass, and soft ocean waves creates a soothing, airy backdrop that feels both luxurious and relaxed.

Beaches in places like Montauk, Amagansett, or Bridgehampton offer wide, open views and beautiful dunes that photograph beautifully at both sunrise and sunset. For outdoor maternity photos in summer, I especially love sessions that begin in the dunes with tall grass swaying and end with bare feet at the water’s edge as the sun dips low. The colors at this time of evening are incredibly flattering - soft pinks, golds, and blues that complement light, neutral wardrobes.

A Classic Black Tie Wedding at the New York Athletic Club in New York City

Some weddings feel like they could only happen in one place. This black tie celebration at the New York Athletic Club was one of them. An iconic couple who live and love in New York City, they wanted to host an epic party in the city where they fell in love, and they did exactly that. Overlooking Central Park, with a church ceremony nearby, cocktails on the terrace, and a Hank Lane band keeping everyone on the dance floor all night, it truly was a wedding for the ages.

The day began in a light-filled suite at the New York Athletic Club with the familiar hum of New York City below. The bride got ready surrounded by her closest friends and family, the room buzzing with excitement but still somehow calm. Her gown by Anne Barge was the definition of classic: clean lines, beautiful structure, and a long veil that moved so gracefully it almost felt like part of the city breeze.

Their ceremony took place at St Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church, just a short distance from the New York Athletic Club. It was a beautiful, traditional service filled with heartfelt readings, meaningful music, and the kind of vows that had guests dabbing at their eyes. Watching them walk back up the aisle as newlyweds, beaming, hand in hand, felt like a scene straight out of a classic New York love story.

After the ceremony, we made our way toward Central Park for portraits. The New York Athletic Club looks out over the park, and incorporating that view into their images was so important to them. Guests arrived at the New York Athletic Club to be greeted with cocktails on the terrace, overlooking Central Park and the city skyline. It was the perfect way to welcome everyone into the celebration: a warm fall breeze, glasses clinking, and the buzz of conversation against one of the best views in New York City. From the terrace, guests moved into the grand ballroom at the New York Athletic Club. The space was styled in a timeless, Classic Wedding aesthetic: white and cream florals, soft candlelight, and elegant touches that let the beauty of the room shine.

The couple made a joyful entrance into the room, surrounded by cheers, and shared a romantic first dance as the city sparkled just outside the windows. Eventful Days helped keep the day running smoothly and on time. The Nocturne Band from Hank Lane took over and truly turned the evening into the epic party the couple had dreamed of. The dance floor was full from the first song to the last; guests only sat down when dinner was served and were right back up again as soon as they could. There was this incredible mix of elegance and pure, unfiltered joy, black tie glamour paired with barefoot dancing and big, happy smiles.

An at-home Newborn Session in Hoboken, NJ

Those first days at home with your baby feel like their own little world. The days blur together, the nights are long, and somehow the tiniest moments mean the most. As a NYC newborn photographer, my favorite way to capture this season is simply to come to you, let you relax in your own space, and photograph your family exactly as you are.

This sweet Hoboken newborn session was just that, a calm, cozy morning with the sun streaming in, a sleepy baby boy, and two brand-new parents completely in love. The light in their home was beautiful, with big windows, soft walls, and that gentle morning glow photographers dream of. We started in the bedroom, bare feet, comfy clothes, baby swaddled and snuggled in.

As a NYC family photographer working across New York and New Jersey, I’ve found that at-home sessions are the most relaxed, natural way to capture newborns. Your home is where your story is happening—late-night feedings, quiet naps, the first time you bring your baby through the front door.

We kept the posing simple and natural: baby on the bed, swaddled and cozy, with Mom and Dad close by. I focused on the sweet little details—tiny fingers around Dad’s thumb, squishy cheeks, long eyelashes resting on his skin. Then we moved to the window and the baby’s nursery, capturing Mom and Dad taking turns holding him, kissing his forehead, and just soaking him in. No stiff poses, just comfortable, real moments.

We typically plan newborn sessions for the first two to three weeks after the baby arrives, but I always keep things flexible as babies have their own timeline, and that’s okay. My goal is to make the experience easy and calm, so you can just be with your baby while I capture it all.

Sunset Family Beach Photography at the Sound View in Greenport, NY

Family beach photography will always have my heart. The mix of salty air, soft sand, and warm sunset light creates the most effortless setting for real connection. This sweet milestone session at the Sound View Hotel in Greenport, NY, was all of that and more, shy smiles at the start, sandy toes, and twirling princess dresses by the end.

Greenport is one of my favorite locations for family beach photos. Nestled along the North Fork of Long Island, it feels like a peaceful escape while still being an easy trip from the city. The Sound View Hotel sits right on the water, overlooking the Long Island Sound, which makes it a dream spot for a NY family photographer.

As a New York City Family Photographer and a native New Yorker, I thought it would be a good idea to put all of my favorite Central Park photo locations for family photos in one post so that you’d have everything you need to know to capture stunning, timeless family portraits in NYC's most iconic green space.

Central Park is one of the most magical backdrops for family photography in the world. With 843 acres of rolling meadows, iconic bridges, blooming gardens, and dramatic skyline views, it offers something for every family's style, from whimsical and playful to classic and elegant. Whether you're visiting New York City or you're a local family looking for a memorable session, this guide will help you make the most of your time in the park.

Best Locations in Central Park for Family Photos

Bethesda Fountain & Terrace - Perhaps the most iconic spot in all of Central Park, the Bethesda Fountain and its surrounding terrace offer grandeur and architectural beauty. The Angel of the Waters statue creates a stunning focal point, and the wide stone steps make for natural, relaxed posing. This location works beautifully for families of all sizes.

Photographer Tip: Arrive early on weekend mornings before crowds build up. The warm light in the archway leading to the terrace creates an almost painterly effect on portraits.

The Bow Bridge - The elegant cast-iron Bow Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in the park — and for good reason. The bridge spans the Lake beautifully, and in spring and fall the surrounding foliage creates a dreamy, romantic atmosphere. It's an especially beloved spot for families with young children, who love to peer over the railings into the water.

Best Season: Fall foliage (late October–early November) turns the scene golden and orange, making this one of the most breathtaking backdrops of the year.

Conservatory Garden - Tucked away on the Upper East Side of the park at 105th Street, the Conservatory Garden is Central Park's only formal garden and a hidden gem for photographers. The three garden sections — English, French, and Italian — offer manicured hedges, flowering wisteria, and the beloved Secret Garden fountain. Because it requires a short walk from major entrances, it's much less crowded than other spots.

Best Time: Late April through May for spectacular spring blooms, or late September for the Michaelmas daisy display.

Sheep Meadow - When you want open space, natural light, and that quintessential New York City skyline in the background, Sheep Meadow is your spot. This 15-acre lawn offers a relaxed, picnic-style atmosphere that's perfect for families with young children who need room to run. The skyline of the Upper West Side framed against a blue sky makes for stunning wide-angle family shots.

Clothing Tip: Bright, coordinated outfits pop beautifully against the green lawn and blue sky. Avoid busy patterns that compete with the lush background.

Cherry Hill & The Lake - The area near Cherry Hill offers a fountain, a classic Victorian-style bridge, and sweeping views across The Lake toward the Bow Bridge. It's a versatile spot that works for both close-up portraits and wider environmental shots that capture the park's grandeur.

Best Times of Day & Season

After Sunrise: I have learned that over the years, the best time to go to Central Park is right after sunrise. Less crowds, Fewer distractions in the background, and it feels as if you have the park, all 843 acres to yourself. It’s truly magical!

Golden Hour - The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset provide soft, warm, flattering light that is ideal for portraits. In Central Park, late afternoon golden hour, roughly 5–7 pm in summer, bathes the Bethesda Terrace and open meadows in gorgeous amber light.

Seasonal Highlights

Spring (April–May): Cherry blossoms near the Reservoir and Conservatory Garden; fresh green foliage throughout the park.
Summer (June–August): Lush, full greenery; best for early morning sessions before heat and crowds peak.
Fall (October–November): Peak foliage makes this the most sought-after season. Book photographers well in advance.
Winter (December–March): A snowy Central Park is utterly magical. Far fewer tourists and a beautiful, quiet atmosphere.

What to Wear for Central Park Family Photos

Your clothing choices can make or break the overall look of your photos. Here are some tried-and-true guidelines:

• Coordinate without matching. Choose a two or three-color palette and let each family member wear something different within that palette.

• Do not wear Black for your photos.

• Avoid busy logos, large graphics, and neon colors that distract from faces and expressions.

• Layer up in fall and winter. Think scarves, jackets, and boots add texture and visual interest.

• Comfortable shoes matter. You'll be walking on grass, cobblestones, and paths. Avoid shoes that will cause discomfort.

• Bring a change of outfit for children. Little ones get dirty quickly, especially near the water and on the grass.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Session

• Book your photo session anywhere from 4–8 weeks in advance, especially for fall sessions, which fill up months ahead.

• Arrive 15 minutes early to let children explore and settle in before photos begin.

• Bring snacks and small props like bubbles, a balloon, or a favorite stuffed animal to keep young children engaged.

• Check the NYC Parks event calendar. Some days, the park is busier due to events, and certain areas may be closed.
